Instructors: 

Bill Brenner is the Sr. Director Club and Coach Development of U.S. Masters Swimming. He has over 35 years of experience coaching swimming at the age group, college and Masters levels. A USMS certified level 4 Masters coach, Bill has been involved in the evolution of the USMS Masters coach certification courses curricula and has taught hundreds of classes to thousands of Masters coaches. Bill established the USMS Adult learn-to-swim certification program and serves as an ALTS lead instructor. With the knowledge acquired from coaching 20-30 Masters swim clinics each year, Bill recently wrote the USMS Clinic Course for Coaches, teaching Masters coaches how to run a successful USMS stroke development clinic. Bill serves as an ambassador and advocate for USMS by visiting hundreds of existing clubs and workout groups, establishing new Masters programs, speaking at national aquatics conferences and maintaining relationships with strategic partners such as USA-Swimming, USA-Triathlon, Y-USA, LifeTime Fitness and the Kroc Centers. Prior to joining USMS as a staff member, Bill served USMS as a volunteer at the local and national level. He has been a swim meet director, support team staff member and coach at his local program, the Sarasota YMCA Sharks Masters. Bill enjoys sharing his passion for swimming with others by encouraging adults to swim for life.

Mel Goldstein is the founder and head coach of Indy Aquatic Masters in Indianapolis, Indiana with over 300 registered Masters swimmers. Currently, IAM host Masters practices at seven locations including high schools, private clubs, JCCs, university and college campuses with new locations on the horizon. Mel hosts local, regional and national meets. Mel has hosted seven USMS National Championships.
Mel’s accolades include the 2001 Speedo U.S. Masters Coach of the year and the 1997 Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award that goes annually to a person who best supports the objectives of Masters swimming and is the highest honor bestowed by U. S. Masters Swimming. He is a past President of USMS, Board of Directors member and a USMS All American with 255 individual top ten achievements. In 2012, he was inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.

Requirements:
  • You must be a current USMS Member to participate in the course and receive USMS certification.
  • You must be a USMS certified Level 1 Masters coach. If you have not completed the online Level 1 Masters coach certification, you may find out more about this virtual class here.
Certification Process:
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework, including all required applications and successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS Level 2 Certified Masters Coach certification.

Fees:
$200 for Level 2 course.

Maximum:
Maximum attendance is 30.

Current full-time, part-time, volunteer coaches or anyone interested in becoming a Masters coach. Anyone interested in starting or supporting a Masters program.

U.S. Masters Swimming is hosting a USMS "How-to put on a clinic" course for coaches on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 & 4, 2025 in Concord, MA.

The USMS Clinic Course for Coaches, offered by USMS Club and Coach Services, instructs the Masters coach or adult learn-to-swim instructor how to conceptualize, organize and deliver a stroke development clinic (SDC). The course consists of both a classroom and on-deck component. The registration for the clinic course is limited to 12 coaches per class. You must be a Masters coach who has successfully completed Level 1, or higher, of the USMS Masters coach certification or be a USMS-certified adult learn-to-swim instructor. Current USMS membership is also required.

Fees:
$60.00 per coach. USMS-designated Masters coaches and designated certified ALTS instructors receive a $10 discount during the online registration process.

Maximum:
Maximum attendance is 20 coaches.

Who should attend?
Certified Masters coaches who want to develop the skills and resources necessary to host a successful stroke development clinic. ALTS instructors who want to learn stroke-development drills and techniques to use with advanced-beginner swimmers.

Instructor:
Bill Meier is a lead USMS-certified Adult Learn to Swim instructor and Level 4 USMS-certified Masters coach. He is the facility director for the Kilpatrick Athletic Center at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Mass., and the head coach of the PaceMakers swim team. As the chairman of the New England LMSC, he directed an effort to teach adults to swim, and that program has grown into USMS’s national April is Adult Learn-to-Swim Month campaign. Bill has run a successful SwimAmerica program for over 20 years and serves as their National Program Diresctor. He was the captain of his college team and, as an ocean lifeguard on the south shore of Long Island, competed in the Ironman and ocean dory races.

ALTS Prerequisites:
You must be a current USMS member to participate in the course and receive USMS ALTS Instructor certification. You must be able to perform the following five water-competency skills:
  • Step or jump into deep water and return to the surface
  • Float or tread water for one minute
  • Turn around in a full circle and find an exit
  • Swim 25 yards to the exit
  • Exit from the water
Certification Process:
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework and the in-water instruction, including all successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS ALTS Certified Instructor certification.

Fees:
$250 per instructor registration. Your ALTS Certified Instructor designation is active until the end of the calendar year in which it is achieved, and can be renewed by paying a $30 annual fee when updating your USMS membership each year.  USMS provides references and support for active member instructors only.

USMS Stroke Development and Improvement Clinic for Swimmers - Concord, MA

USMS is sponsoring a USMS stroke development and improvement clinic for swimmers of all abilities. All four strokes will be evaluated and corrected with the use of drills and coach instruction. Bill Brenner and local Masters coaches will be on hand to help you improve your technique and teach you drills that will enable you to continue to refine your stroke. Swimmers are not required to swim all strokes and may work on only those strokes they choose. All swimmers must be able to swim a minimum of 200 yards comfortably.

Equipment: Please bring your suit, goggles, fins, paddles and a towel. Fins are necessary because without them many of the drills may be difficult.  Fins help create buoyancy and mild propulsion.

A USMS certified level 4 Masters coach, Bill has been involved in the evolution of the USMS Masters coach certification courses curricula and has taught hundreds of classes to thousands of Masters coaches. Bill established the USMS Adult learn-to-swim certification program and serves as an ALTS lead instructor. With the knowledge acquired from coaching 20-30 Masters swim clinics each year, Bill recently wrote the USMS Clinic Course for Coaches, teaching Masters coaches how to run a successful USMS stroke development clinic. Bill serves as an ambassador and advocate for USMS by visiting hundreds of existing clubs and workout groups, establishing new Masters programs, speaking at national aquatics conferences and maintaining relationships with strategic partners such as USA-Swimming, USA-Triathlon, Y-USA, LifeTime Fitness and the Kroc Centers. Prior to joining USMS as a staff member, Bill served USMS as a volunteer at the local and national level. He has been a swim meet director, support team staff member and coach at his local program, the Sarasota Sharks Masters. Bill enjoys sharing his passion for swimming with others by encouraging adults to swim for life.

Mel Goldstein is the founder and head coach of Indy Aquatic Masters in Indianapolis, Indiana with over 300 registered Masters swimmers. Currently, IAM host Masters practices at seven locations including high schools, private clubs, JCCs, university and college campuses with new locations on the horizon. Mel hosts local, regional and national meets. Mel has hosted seven USMS National Championships with Indianapolis scheduled to host the 2024 USMS Spring Nationals.
Mel’s accolades include the 2001 Speedo U.S. Masters Coach of the year and the 1997 Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award that goes annually to a person who best supports the objectives of Masters swimming and is the highest honor bestowed by U. S. Masters Swimming. He is a past President of USMS, Board of Directors member and a USMS All American with 255 individual top ten achievements. In 2012, he was inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.

Requirements
You must have completed Levels 1&2 of the USMS Masters coach certification program and be a current USMS Member to participate in the course.

Certification Process
Upon successful completion of the certification process, including all required memberships, applications and completed tests: Each person will be awarded a USMS level 3 Certified Masters Coach certificate.

Fees
$175 for Level 3 course.

Maximum attendance is 30.

  • Swim 25 yards to the exit
  • Exit from the water
Certification Process:
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework and the in-water instruction, including all successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS ALTS Certified Instructor certification.

Fees:
$250 per instructor registration. Your ALTS Certified Instructor designation is active until the end of the calendar year in which it is achieved, and can be renewed by paying a $30 annual fee when updating your USMS membership each year.  USMS provides references and support for active member instructors only.

Wendy Neely is a lead USMS-certified Adult Learn to Swim instructor and USMS-certified level 3 coach. She has more than 20 years of coaching experience and is head coach of Blue Wave Aquatics in Federal Way, Wash. She is a 2010 recipient of the USMS Kerry O’Brien Coaches Award, which is awarded for grassroots coaching accomplishment. In 2013, Blue Wave Aquatics was honored as Local Club of the Year, and also received a Swimming Saves Lives Foundation grant to provide swim lessons for adults.

ALTS Prerequisites:
You must be a current USMS member to participate in the course and receive USMS ALTS Instructor certification. You must be able to perform the following five water-competency skills:
  • Step or jump into deep water and return to the surface
  • Float or tread water for one minute
  • Turn around in a full circle and find an exit
  • Swim 25 yards to the exit
  • Exit from the water
Certification Process:
Upon successful completion of the classroom coursework and the in-water instruction, including all successfully completed tests, each person will be awarded USMS ALTS Certified Instructor certification.

Fees:
$250 per instructor registration. Your ALTS Certified Instructor designation is active until the end of the calendar year in which it is achieved, and can be renewed by paying a $30 annual fee when updating your USMS membership each year.  USMS provides references and support for active member instructors only.

Scholarships:
Please contact your club or LMSC for scholarship assistance. MOVY Master's has agreed to reimburse 50% of the registration fee for their members successfully completing this course.

Maximum:
Maximum attendance is 30.

Who should attend?
Anyone who teaches, or wants to teach, adult swim lessons both publicly and privately.  Anyone interested in supporting their community by helping to teach adults to swim.

Instructors: Bill Brenner and Mel Goldstein

Bill Brenner is the Sr. Director Club and Coach Development of U.S. Masters Swimming. He has over 35 years of experience coaching swimming at the age group, college and Masters levels. A USMS certified level 4 Masters coach, Bill has been involved in the evolution of the USMS Masters coach certification courses curricula and has taught hundreds of classes to thousands of Masters coaches. Bill established the USMS Adult learn-to-swim certification program and serves as an ALTS lead instructor. With the knowledge acquired from coaching 20-30 Masters swim clinics each year, Bill recently wrote the USMS Clinic Course for Coaches, teaching Masters coaches how to run a successful USMS stroke development clinic. Bill serves as an ambassador and advocate for USMS by visiting hundreds of existing clubs and workout groups, establishing new Masters programs, speaking at national aquatics conferences and maintaining relationships with strategic partners such as USA-Swimming, USA-Triathlon, Y-USA, LifeTime Fitness and the Kroc Centers. Prior to joining USMS as a staff member, Bill served USMS as a volunteer at the local and national level. He has been a swim meet director, support team staff member and coach at his local program, the Sarasota Sharks Masters. Bill enjoys sharing his passion for swimming with others by encouraging adults to swim for life.

Mel Goldstein is the founder and head coach of Indy Aquatic Masters in Indianapolis, Indiana with over 300 registered Masters swimmers. Currently, IAM host Masters practices at seven locations including high schools, private clubs, JCCs, university and college campuses with new locations on the horizon. Mel hosts local, regional and national meets. Mel has hosted seven USMS National Championships with Indianapolis scheduled to host the 2024 USMS Spring Nationals.
Mel’s accolades include the 2001 Speedo U.S. Masters Coach of the year and the 1997 Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award that goes annually to a person who best supports the objectives of Masters swimming and is the highest honor bestowed by U. S. Masters Swimming. He is a past President of USMS, Board of Directors member and a USMS All American with 255 individual top ten achievements. In 2012, he was inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame.

Requirements
You must have completed Levels 1&2 of the USMS Masters coach certification program and be a current USMS Member to participate in the course.

Certification Process
Upon successful completion of the certification process, including all required memberships, applications and completed tests: Each person will be awarded a USMS level 3 Certified Masters Coach certificate.

Fees
$175 for Level 3 course.

Maximum attendance is 30.

Who should attend?
Current full-time, part-time or volunteer coaches who would like to explore the possibilities of coaching Masters swimmers as a profession. Anyone interested in supporting their existing team and coach.
